Contra: Evolution, a 2D action platform game, hands you the reins to an elite soldier who must battle against the invading forces who have taken refuge in the South African jungles. You choose from a wide host of characters, but to be honest, they all behave the same way once you start playing. Unlike with the traditional Contra games, your soldier starts shooting automatically, and he never stops shooting. In a way, this beneficial addition means you only have to worry about dodging, jumping and using your special abilities.
Like with the traditional Contra games, you switch between phases. You have one where you shoot your enemies and the second phase where you evade their bullets. You also have phases where you advance forward while in a gunfight and where you shoot to the side of the screen. The game raises feelings of nostalgia for the fans of the original titles. In fact, the game designers made the levels like the first game. For those looking for a graphically updated version of Contra, this probably isn’t your game. While changes were made to modernize the Contra series, the results were lukewarm.
Contra: Evolution left me disappointed, partly because the controls hold it back and also because I had high expectations going in. Contra is a beloved game and the iOS app is not as easy to play as the original arcade game. I’m glad it’s available on iOS, but I will still choose the arcade version over it anyway. Contra’s PAL version, Probotector, notably changes humans in the game, including protagonists Lance and Bill, into robots. This was done to comply with violence-themed censorship laws. Contra: Evolution gives you an awesome variety of weapons, and you have two gameplay modes: Mission mode and Arcade mode. The Arcade mode looks like a remade version of the NES title, and it includes all the bosses and stages you remember. The music is lively and pretty good, but some songs do end earlier than what they did on the NES. Overall, however, this game gives you hours of entertainment.
